Description: When Voices of Change, a contemporary music group in Dallas, chose to perform an early work of mine, Conversations, for alto flute and clarinet, I asked if they would let me write a companion piece for the same concert. Conversations Continued is this piece, written from the perspective of 36 years later – a then and now on the topic of a dialogue between alto flute and clarinet. Written for Voices of Change, this work incorporates some of the ideas of Artistic Director Maria Schleuning’s view of the original Conversations – which she told me that she had chosen because she thought it would be fun for the audience, and because she considered it a humorous piece (something my serious young self had never considered). This new work is meant to be short, light and playful. The underlying ideas are based on how two people inter-relate. The three miniature movements are called Introductions, Competition, and Old Friends.
