Description: Commissioned by Cabrillo Music Fest; "..more a map or set of tonal clues.. relocation of the musicians throughout the theatre...evocative... modal...political" - The Santa Cruz Sentinel 8/23/74. It is an oratorio on Joan of Arc. The words are from her trial as translated from Latin, to Old French, to French and into English. There is a coloratura soprano to sing the saints, a soprano to sing Joan, a tenor to sing the clergy, and a baritone to sing the Burgundian knights. The orchestra is divided into five parts in the shape of a cross throughout the hall. Scaffolding is erected on stage and a dancer dances the part of the people outside the trial above everyone. Conducting is done by color cues projected. The score consists of decoded text that modulates from an ABCDEFG code to ABCDEF code and eventually to ABAB code. Aa A is audible to keep everyone in tune and a ring modulator affects the voice of Joan. A recording of the instrumental parts only performed on the piano is available on the Pogus CD entitled PEACHY KEEN-O.
