Description: Since I have been working for several years with the guitarist Volkmar Zimmermann, I asked him what he wanted in a solo guitar piece. He said that he liked to play counterpoint and melody. He also wanted the guitar to be used in an angry way (like the guitarist Pete Townsend) and to have guitar chords containing open strings. The resulting work uses all of these techniques in five short movements of changing moods. In a bow to the composer Bela Bartòk, this work is in arch form. The fifth movement is a variant of the first, and the second a variant of the fourth. The third brings back the angry mood that had dissipated about 2/3 of the way through the movement. Throughout the work, several guitar techniques, such as pizzicato, harmonics, sul tasto, and sul ponticello are used to color the work. The work is dedicated to Volkmar.
