Description: Singing My Song was written for Volume I of Subito Music Corporation’s Piano Premieres. I liked the idea of writing for piano students, having spent 20 years being one myself – beginning when I was a child studying at the Dalcroze School of Music. There are two parts to the title of this work - Singing, and My Song. In movement I (representing Singing) I have created a melody that can be remembered and sung. It is developed with variations that include unexpected “twists’ to the material, so that listeners can make new musical discoveries on hearing the piece more than one time. The second miniature movement, (representing My Song), is constructed in a similar way, but the dynamic shape of each phrase differs from that of the first movement. The second phrase of this second movement uses imitative counterpoint and the third phrase makes use of the rhythmic pattern of triplets against eighth notes as a way both to change and to intensify the rhythm. This movement then uses a shortened return of a melody related to this movement’s opening - as the song dies away.
