Description: “Singing to My Mother” was commissioned by Julie Landsman in memory of her mother. This work is based on "Raisins and Almonds" by Abraham Goldfaden, written for his Yiddish musical Shulamis in 1880. It has become so popular that it is now considered to be a classic folk song. This song was one of Julie Landsman’s mother’s favorite songs. Just as Talmudic procedure requires commentary on a text, this work comments on “Raisins and Almonds”. It also uses the idea of memories fading in and out. Thus, the melody of “Raisins and Almonds” comes into focus phrase by phrase until the entire song is remembered at the end of the work.
