Description: To a Quiet Place was written for Composers Concordance’s concert celebrating the centennial of the invention of the vibraphone. It is in two movements – Journeying Afar and In a Quiet Place. The first movement starts out angrily with loud, dissonant chords. As the movement progresses, quotations from "Oyfn Pripetchik"- some accurate and some distorted by memory - appear. This song was taught to me by my uncle when I was still a toddler. It represents a quiet place - a happy, safe, protected time. As these memories seep in, the anger abates, until the movement reaches a place of quiet. The second short movement establishes the quiet place. Part of the inspiration of this comes from Bernstein’s ending to his show Candide. After all the travails of his main characters, the show ends with “Make Our Garden Grow”. My feeling is that during this difficult year, this may be the best solution – finding the quiet place within.
