Pamela Sklar recently won an ArtsWestchester award for her project Words Into Music. She will be writing and performing a new instrumental ensemble composition informed by interview results she is collecting in Mount Vernon, NY.
Pam collaborates with her own ensembles as a flutist and composer playing & writing classical, world, rock, pop, blues, improvised, meditative and other music. Pam also performs on bass flute, alto flute, piccolo and Native American flute in NY-area venues, and has toured nationally and internationally for many seasons with French crossover composer Claude Bolling. Other performance highlights include legendary pianist/composer Dave Brubeck, tours of Japan, two Grammy Awards Performances with Gil Shaham and with Aretha Franklin, performances with Alan Hovhaness at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY.

A published composer of chamber music, Pam's critically acclaimed music features flutes in unusual combinations with other instruments, and is available on two original cds released in 2012 & 2013 as well as other recordings including 2Flutes New York Tapestries with Laura Falzon.

Pam's original debut cd 'A Native American-Jazz Tribute' is described as "creative…superb…" (Flute Talk Magazine); "the listener is transformed into another time and place…hauntingly beautiful, full of colors" (The Flutist Quarterly), and 'very listenable music that straddles world music and jazz.' (Audiophile Audition).
Her 2nd CD 'Silver Pharaoh' is acclaimed by ARKIVE Music: "Silver Pharaoh seems to invoke Stravinsky in neoclassicist garb and is frankly delightful, especially when spiked with the occasional reference to jazz (a little more authentic, in Sklar's case, than Stravinky's efforts in this direction). Taken from the Book of the Dead, Spell 166…use of five flutes creates something of a magical sound…expertly written."
Born into a family of professional musicians (a first cousin was famed violinist Michael Rabin), Pam first began playing the flute when she was five. She studied at the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division and received her Bachelor of Music Degree with Honors in flute performance from the Mannes College/The New School for Music. Her major teachers included John Wummer, Samuel Baron, Karl Kraber and Marcel Moyse. Her greatest musical influences include Prokofiev, G. F. Handel, Karel Husa, French Impressionist composers, Sarah Vaughan, Lester Young, late '60's rock, the Beatles, Motown, Jimi Hendrix, Native American music, and various memories & dreams. One of her favorite musical personalities was Leonard Bernstein.
