Kummi Dance*
By Pramila Venkateswaran
It's evening. Lamps are alive. Temple bells ring
as I sashay out in a bright red skirt and a zari top.
Sukanya, Radha, and Paddu run to meet me in their finery:
Skirts flying, we dance in a circle, clapping as we move
our hips, and twirl, plaits flying, steps beating
the earth awake to bells and song.
Clap, clap, clap, we dance the kummi
the whole land claps the kummi round and round.
We call our sweethearts, the ones promised to us,
to fill us with joy, more passion than we know;
soon it will be time to wear our mothers' wisdom.
Clap, clap, clap, we dance the kummi
the whole land claps the kummi round and round.
We are birds widening the sky of earth,
feet flying, skirts barely touching the ground,
anklets ringing, faces bathed in jasmine and sweat,
breath in our bodies bursting the hooks
holding our blouses in place.
Clap, clap, clap, we dance the kummi
the whole land claps the kummi round and round.
• Popular folk melody of south India, sung, and danced to during festival season.

Dream Song

Year: 2009

Duration (in minutes): 3 minutes 45 seconds

Difficulty: Medium (college/community)

Category: choral

Instruments: alto, bass voice, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone

Description: SSAATB; commissioned by Acapellago;
I chose Walter de la Mare ‘s poem because of its gentle, magical nature and its description of the world in terms of light, as if it were the first day of creation. The piece begins and ends in a rocking lullaby alternating between D and C. Owls call and lions roar. Near the end, the words and some of the music are cut into small pieces and inserted among other small pieces. The bass section has the last solo, as a father might who is reading this ‘bedtime story’. One person from each section whispers the last words as elves might in the dark after the story is complete and the light is extinguished
A bit more technical description if it is wanted:
The piece begins gently alternating between “sunlight” (in d-minor) and “moonlight” (on the major flat-seven C chord as the dominant substitute). The voices enter group by group. There is a bit of word painting on the “owl calling”. “In a wood of oak and May” is in the playful key of C-major. The words ‘no light’ are set to a great pile of fourths. The lions begin in F-major and roars on a B-diminished-minor-seventh. Roar! That kind of chord continues thru their “wrath” and their being “far away”. When the “elf-light” appears the music returns to the gentle d-minor lullaby of the beginning.
The small face that appears is in d-minor but the smile is a major-minor seventh on B-flat and then a minor-minor seventh on A. (b-flat, d,f,a=smiling—to a,c,e,g=minor-minor seventh).
Near the end, the words and some of the music are cut into small pieces and inserted among other small pieces. The bass section has the last solo, as a father might who is reading this ‘bedtime story’. One person from each section whispers the last words as elves might in the dark after the story is complete and the light is extinguished
--
the poem:
Dream-song
by Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) , from Peacock Pie: A Book of Rhymes, published 1913.
Sunlight, moonlight,
Twilight, starlight --
Gloaming at the close of day,
And an owl calling,
Cool dews falling
In a wood of oak and may.
Lantern-light, taper-light,
Torchlight, no-light:
Darkness at the shut of day,
And lions roaring,
Their wrath pouring
In wild waste places far away.
Elf-light, bat-light,
Touchwood-light and toad-light,
And the sea a shimmering gloom of grey,
And a small face smiling
In a dream's beguiling
In a world of wonders far away.

Comment

Year: 2003

Duration (in minutes): 3 minutes

Difficulty: High (professional)

Category: solo woodwind instrument

Instruments: flute

Publisher: Self-Produced

Description: COMMENT is a series of variations on a theme derived from setting the words to Dorothy Parker’s four line poem, of the same name. The poem compares life to song and experiences that happen by chance, and makes fun of the idea that relationships are likely to succeed.
We are unable to reprint the poem in these notes due to copyright restrictions but the poem is available in collections and is all over the internet due to various poets’ interest.
The music begins cheerfully but very soon there is a little theme signifying that sadly, love has gone wrong (dotted half-notes a Major sixth up and then a minor second down). This is followed by a variation on the cheerful section, an older but wiser variant (with one note missing and a minor second down). Then the “love has gone wrong” theme with longer note values (in augmentation) is followed by a hyperactive variant of the lost love idea and an inverted variant because life is sometimes upside down. The “love has gone wrong” theme is now upside down, lost & depressed (Major sixth down followed by minor second up; inverted). The soloist trills and slides down to the lowest note on the flute, middle-C. There is a manic variant with lots of running around followed by an introspective variant with longer note values. The next one is a variant entitled “tensely cheerful despite all odds”. The last comment is “appearing calm while getting ready to be hysterical” within 6 bars of the end.
It has been recorded twice. The new one will be out on an MSR CD in 2013 entitled "The Praying Mantis and the Bluebird".

THE GOOD CHRISTMAS CAT
By Jo-Ann Krestan
"What's that?" said the cat from his place by the fire. "It's a tree as tall as a church's spire. It's red and it's green and there's glitter and light. They're trimming it, stringing it, making it bright."
"What's that?" said the cat "Why it's quite absurd, a tree in a house, not a single bird. When the night grows cold and it starts to snow, where will the sweet little chick-a-dees go?"
The cat crept out on velvet paws, until he saw the chick-a-dees. He showed no teeth. He hid his claws. He begged them sweetly to come in, please. "I swear I will not touch a feather. I'll keep you safe from nasty weather."
Through an open window and up in the tree, the chick-a-dees flew; he counted twenty-three." That's that," said the cat as he sat by the fire. "It's a Christmas tree that I can admire. And I hope they'll sing to their hearts' desire, for chick-a-dees make such a heavenly choir."

The lambs and donkey lay beside the Christ child on his bed of hay. The cattle lowing in the field felt something sweet that holy day. And on that welcome Christmas morn all hearts were peaceful, hope re-born. Who is this Jesus that his birth gave promise that we'll be redeemed in eternity

Description: Tonal, solo song for Christmas; Words by Jo-Ann Krestan;
Lyrics:
"Christmas eve and a fam'ly was shopping for magic, a Christmas tree and hope. Two trees were left and the lot would be closing at midnight. One would wear angels. The other would stay there alone. Perfect tree with a shape that a young child could copy. A Christmas tree of hope. The tree beside it was small and its branches uneven. That tree was lonely with no one to give it a home. Then the wind from the north brought storms from the mountains. Driving snow and fear thru the hearts of birds in their flight.. But there was reprieve on this cold Christmas Eve, as the tree welcomed them in the night. From on high came a rushing, a promise of angels. The little tree felt joy. The birds found shelter and soon were asleep in his branches. Christmas was magic. The tree and the birds did believe.

The original tune was augmented and extended creating rhytmic surprises and a powerful rhymic drive. The harmony is based on a "I"-"v"-"I" cadence and the melody is reminiscent of a Spanish folk melody. The introduction foreshadows the tonal centers of the first seven variations while changing meter from 8/4 to 7/4 to 6/4 and so on. This piece is also available as a sextet for 4 saxophones and 2 keyboard instruments. Available from the composer.

Publisher: Self-Produced

Description: Performed at the ISCM World Music Days, Brussells. May be performed Fl or Vln, Cl or Ob, with cello and either piano or harpsichord.
The Eighth Ancestor is a character that I read about in a Zen book entitled SELLING WATER BY THE RIVER. This ancestor's message is that it does no good to be angry. The music, in an attempt to reflect this message, is not angry music. It resembles a lullaby and a hora. There are cut-ups of newly composed music and the general feeling is mixolydian- a white-key scale beginning on G. Composed later in 1980, it was my first giant step away from the decoding and magic squares of the avant-guarde aesthetic that had permeated my earlier work. I considered it melodic minimalism because the material was cut-up and rearranged and I called myself an avant-guarde romantic. The first performance was by the Del Barton Baroque Ensemble. It was also performed by The International Society of Contemporary Music in Brussels, Belgium. Brooklyn Baroque has recorded it for an MSR CD entitled "The Praying Mantis and the Bluebird" to be released 2013.

Preparation for the Dominant: outrunning the inevitable

Year: 1979

Duration (in minutes): 4 minutes

Difficulty: High (professional)

Category: solo instrument other than piano, solo woodwind instrument

Instruments: flute

Publisher: Self-Produced

Description: Preparation for the Dominant: outrunning the inevitable
for ocarina solo originally but can be played on any C instrument, especially flute
This is a process piece concerned with different ways of arriving at the dominant (V) in C#. The primary pitches are C#. D#, G#; D, D#, G#; E, D#, G#; A#, D#, G#. The performer chooses one pitch to omit throughout the piece and whenever that pitch is reached, the performer must hold the preceding pitch the duration of the omitted tone plus the preceding tone’s original duration. That is the source of the rhythmic changes within the piece. Otherwise, all the tones would be of the same duration except for the final pitch. The etude-like quality derives from a filling in of the space between the primary pitches with other ones in various ways. When the end is reached, the tonic (I) may no longer sound like the tonic.

Kummi Dance*
By Pramila Venkateswaran
It's evening. Lamps are alive. Temple bells ring
as I sashay out in a bright red skirt and a zari top.
Sukanya, Radha, and Paddu run to meet me in their finery:
Skirts flying, we dance in a circle, clapping as we move
our hips, and twirl, plaits flying, steps beating
the earth awake to bells and song.
Clap, clap, clap, we dance the kummi
the whole land claps the kummi round and round.
We call our sweethearts, the ones promised to us,
to fill us with joy, more passion than we know;
soon it will be time to wear our mothers' wisdom.
Clap, clap, clap, we dance the kummi
the whole land claps the kummi round and round.
We are birds widening the sky of earth,
feet flying, skirts barely touching the ground,
anklets ringing, faces bathed in jasmine and sweat,
breath in our bodies bursting the hooks
holding our blouses in place.
Clap, clap, clap, we dance the kummi
the whole land claps the kummi round and round.
• Popular folk melody of south India, sung, and danced to during festival season.

Dream Song

Year: 2009

Duration (in minutes): 3 minutes 45 seconds

Difficulty: Medium (college/community)

Category: choral

Instruments: alto, bass voice, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone

Description: SSAATB; commissioned by Acapellago;

Difficulty: Medium (college/community)

Category: solo voice(s) with piano

Instruments: mezzo soprano

Publisher: Self-Produced

Description: Tonal, solo song for Christmas; Words by Jo-Ann Krestan;
The tree and the birds did believe.

like the joy on Mary's face.
We are soft'ned by compassion
when we listen with our souls.
And our circle becomes wider and the world becomes more whole.

Piano Concerto

Duration (in minutes): 15'39;

Difficulty: Medium (college/community)

Category: concertos

Instruments: cello, percussion, piano, viola, violin

Description: This piece is tonal/modal, very American and rather grand. It is based on a previous piece and grew out of my experiences as a pianist including a little bit of rock and gospel, some ballet accoompaniment, Moussorsky from piano recitals, and those "starry night" themes I love. Near the end, these ideas are cut into each other. Available from the composer. Out on the New World CD entitled SWALES & ANGELS.

The score is available from the composer.

Description: First performed by the Clearwater String Quartet. This is a swale that includes a lot of partying framed by a theme going forwards at the beginning and backwards near the end, a Janus. Because it was written with cellist Carol Buck and her children, there is a small children's theme just after the introduction which runs in and out later on in the piece. An aeolian alleluia interupts and returns later a half-step down. It ends with a feeling of a "starry night" at the original tonal center.

A few years later, a longer version of that piece for piano solo was commissioned by choreographer Donna Oberstein for Montclair State College.
